The Grail

What is The Grail!?

Geoffrey’s Comics has over 200 cumulative years of comic book reading experience under its belt. Our diverse employees and customers have helped us curate what we think are simply the most transcendent comic book works out there.  We aren’t talking about books that are just “very good” – books from The Grail are the best of the best.  These comic books have defined the comic book genre for the better!   These comic books are the works that should be in a museum, that everyone should read, that we should blast into space to prove we are intelligent.

Grail books are also specifically chosen because they stand alone.  No need to read any previous volumes.  When we recommend something in the Grail, that means it exists as a complete work, no other reading required.

For those new to comics, we are removing the barrier to entry to introduce you to some of the defining works of the comic book art form.

Even the most avid comic reader can’t read all the comics out there, so we created a list for even the most well-read comic fan to find something new. We love sharing the world of comic books with anybody and everybody.  We want to make sure whether it’s your first book or your fiftieth book – you’re taking home a good one.

The Vision

The Vision
by Tom King and Gabriel Walta
The Vision by Tom King is a heart breaking tale of the classic Pinnochio story of a robotic being wanting to become “real”. The Vision creates a family for himself (If that sounds like WandaVision – it should. This comic is referenced in nearly every episode of WandaVision, as it is the definitive Vision tale). But what does it mean to be human? It means to have faults. And Vision maybe deals with a few too many faults for his own good. But being overwhelmed and not knowing what to do is probably the most human thing possible. Plus it features Sparky the robot dog!

Young Avengers

Young Avengers
by Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung
In the wake of Avengers Disassembled, a mysterious new group of teen super heroes appears. But who are they? Where did they come from? And what right do they have to call themselves the Young Avengers? This one comic ties into so many important Phase 3 movies and tv shows! This comic is referenced in WandaVision, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the new Hawkeye show, and the Captain Marvel movie. Who knew one little comic would grow up to take over the MCU!!! Collects Young Avengers #1-6.

Civil War

Civil War
by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven
This was one of those Marvel events where they promised “Everything would change” - but this time they actually delivered. Captain America dealt with the ramifications of this comic for nearly a decade. This comic became the blueprint for Phase 2 at the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Plus Steve McNiven is an amazing artist to see work on interior pages. He's gotten to the point where he makes more money drawing covers, so you might never see his interior pencils again. Just another reason to pick up this modern classic.

The Ultimates Volume 1

The Ultimates Volume 1
by Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch
The Ultimate Universe was a Marvel experiment, the best kind of expirement because it produced some amazing story-telling. It was the early 00s and the team at Marvel asked the question – What would it look like if we started the Marvel Universe today!? Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate X-Men began the universe, then it grew up with The Ultimates (The name of the AVENGERS, in that universe). Mark Millar writing a much more adult take on the Avengers, with Bryan Hitch drawing some of the most epic comic pages ever printed. Bryan Hitch is the artist for widescreen comic book action. Every artist is given the same amount of space, but somehow Bryan Hitch just fits more in there than any other artist working. This series lays out most of the story that became the Avengers in the MCU. It is a stand alone adventure that literally begins at the beginning, as this is the origin of the Avengers in that universe.

Avengers Forever

Avengers Forever
by Kurt Busiek and Carlos Pacheco
Written by Kurt Busiek with absolutely smashing artwork by Carlos Pacheco. I mean it, the book is gorgeous. This is Carlos Pacheco at his prime. A cartoon-y version of the super-detailed George Perez, Pacheco kills it on every page, making this roller coater ride through time one that is just so enjoyable to look at. This was a 12 issue maxi-series that spans the entire history of the Avengers! Immortus must assemble a group of Avengers from across time to fight Kang – but wait – Imortus is Kang when he grows up! TIME TRAVEL IS WACKY! And this stand alone story jumps around the canon of the Avengers, literally giving you a crash course as you hang on for the wild ride that spans all of history! Kurt Busiek's considerable work on both the Avengers, and with Kang specifically reach their pinnacle here in this book.
