The Ultimate Universe was a Marvel experiment, the best kind of expirement because it produced some amazing story-telling. It was the early 00s and the team at Marvel asked the question – What would it look like if we started the Marvel Universe today!? Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate X-Men began the universe, then it grew up with The Ultimates (The name of the AVENGERS, in that universe). Mark Millar writing a much more adult take on the Avengers, with Bryan Hitch drawing some of the most epic comic pages ever printed. Bryan Hitch is the artist for widescreen comic book action. Every artist is given the same amount of space, but somehow Bryan Hitch just fits more in there than any other artist working. This series lays out most of the story that became the Avengers in the MCU. It is a stand alone adventure that literally begins at the beginning, as this is the origin of the Avengers in that universe.
